Anti-Recipe: Vegan No-Bake Chocolate Oatmeal Cookies

Chocolate oatmeal cookies (aka cow patties…ew) might not be pretty, but what they lack in looks, they completely make up for in taste. I’ve always liked them, but haven’t made them in years.

This might be the time to officially announce that since January I’ve been eating a mostly vegan diet. It’s for a whole bunch of reasons, but mainly health. I’ve been hesitant to share it because I wasn’t sure how it fit with what SBS is, but I decided since it is something I’m trying and Southern Belle Simple is about me, it would be strange if I completely omitted this part of my life from the blog. So there’s that.

Anyway, back to what matters most….easy chocolate cookies. I followed the fabulous Ezra Pound Cake’s recipe for these, but substituted coconut milk (plain) for the milk and Earth Balance vegan buttery sticks for the butter. I also used brown sugar instead of white.

Let’s just say there are none left. And I only made them a day ago. Stretchy pants for everyone. I couldn’t tell the difference from my version and the ones I’ve had in the past with all the dairy. I’ll definitely be making these again.

No matter which version you prefer, these would surely make a wonderful little cheap & easy Valentine’s treat if you were in need of such a thing. Hope your week is off to a good start!

A Dream is a Wish Our Heart Makes

I just finished reading the most delightful little book called “Mrs. ‘Arris Goes to Paris.” Written by Paul Gallico in 1958, it is the story of a London housekeeper who gets the notion to have a haute couture Christian Dior dress made for herself. Once Mrs. Harris gets this idea in her mind, she is determined to see it through. Maybe it’s because she’s the underdog or maybe because we all have secret wishes we long for, but this story resonated with me.

I don’t want to give anything away…but you should definitely try to track down a copy. While the idea of a dress costing 1/3 of your annual salary might sound preposterous, maybe you dream of something else. Whether your heart’s desire is a trip or a dress, a certain kind of home or an experience, I think it’s nice to be reminded that there can be good in being determined for something. Even when getting the thing doesn’t turn out exactly like we’d expected (does it ever?), there can be wonderful growth.

To me, the lesson learned from this story is that we must keep wishing and dreaming…even if everyone thinks what we’re wishing for is silly. What secret dreams are you harboring these days? I’ll believe they are possible for you if you’ll believe with me for mine!

For the Beau: Sending Flowers

Valentine’s Day is approaching and I’m sure many of the beaus (and aspiring beaus) out there have flowers on their minds. Yes, we gals love flowers. I’m not sure why we love them so much, but maybe it’s just one of those inexplicable truths.

Here is a bit of advice for the gentleman who desires to show his affections with a floral gift, courtesy of that grand dame of propriety herself, Amy Vanderbilt. Her advice may be over 50 years old, but I think it still rings true.

“A man who is laying siege to a girl’s heart does well not to systematize his flower-sending. I knew one man who could be counted on to send two dozen long-stemmed red roses every Saturday, rain or shine. And another who might send a gay red geranium in a simple clay pot or turn up with a single gardenia in a twist of green waxed paper or a new recording or some fresh catnip for the kitten one never knew. Any woman could tell in a minute which was the more interesting man.”

While I’ve never been one to stick my nose in the air over a gift of roses, I get Ms. V’s point that variety is the spice of life. Gents, maybe mix things up with something unexpected this year to truly win the affections of the belle you’ve set your cap after.

Fashion + Art = Inspiration!

Art and fashion are closely linked in my mind and when I saw these wonderful creations on the collage site Polyvore, I wanted to share them. Georgina, an art lover and former art history student got inspiration from different works of art and created fashionable representations of each.

Maybe fashion (or art, for that matter) isn’t your thing…but these just serve to show that you can take inspiration from all sorts of places and allow it to come to life in different ways.

I once said I wanted to dress like a cupcake would feel, but maybe I should dress like a painting instead. Happy Monday, sweets!

Elegant DIY Framed Art

It’s true I’m a huge art lover, but I’m often appalled by the price of framed art I see in stores. When I spotted these wonderful framed pieces that my friend created on a dime, I just knew I had to share them. He wanted a set of botanical prints that looked great, but didn’t break the bank. His solution? Buy a science book with lots of pretty color plates and use them to create one-of-a-kind art.

I’m sure some librarians would cringe at the thought of cutting up a beautiful book, but I can’t think of a better way to enjoy those gorgeous images than by putting them on display. My friend took these to a frame shop, but you could easily buy ready-made frames to save on cost. Even mismatched frames can be spray painted the same color to create a unified look.

I really enjoy thinking outside the usual to bring a little lovely in your home. Have you done anything lately that made you feel like a DIY rockstar? I’d love to hear about it!

Only in the South: Toilet Love

If you were shocked to see a toilet (yes, it’s mine) on the ol’ blog today…hang on to your socks. There is a reason for this post and it has nothing to do with anything gross. This picture might not look like very much to you. It’s just your average bathroom commode. But when I came home from work last night and saw it, I almost swooned and promptly took a picture.

You see…a couple (ok, three) years ago, yours truly was doing some routine plumbing adjustments to the toilet tank when the ceramic tank lid slipped from my hands and broke into 78 pieces on the bathroom floor. This was not my finest moment. For whatever reason, hardware stores don’t sell just the tank lid….you have to buy a whole new toilet. But my toilet was fine and I couldn’t justify spending the money on a new one while the current one worked ok (minus the tank lid).

So I lived without the lid for all this time, mostly having gotten used to it, but also secretly hating the whole bathroom situation. My dad kindly offered to buy me a new toilet for Christmas, but, not wishing to see one under the tree on Dec. 25, I declined his offer.

Sunday afternoon, I had a small crying jag in which I moaned to my beau about all the unfinished projects around my house, including the toilet minus a tank lid which “embarrassed me to the point that I can’t have people over and have taken to compulsive clothes shopping to soothe myself.” {drama, I tell you}

My southern beau, who didn’t realize this was such a tragic issue for me, calmly said he’d be happy to visit a salvage shop where he was sure he could find me a replacement. I didn’t think he’d be able to find one, but lo and behold, one trip to the salvage store, $5 and 1 canister of Lysol disinfectant wipes later, I have a toilet tank lid that could pass for the original. {If you’re wondering why it took us 3 years to figure out this was such an easy fix, I have no answer for you. I, too, am wondering this.}

So yes, I love my toilet. Only in the south would a girl get so worked up over something like a toilet and only a southern beau like mine could save the day with such quiet bravado. If only he’d waited a couple of weeks to present me with the lid…it could have gone down in history as the best/worst Valentine’s Day gift ever.

Bosoms & Butter: A Birthday Celebration

Two beloved southern ladies were born on this day and I just didn’t feel right not honoring their births with a little virtual party here on the blog. First, the fabulous Dolly Parton, East Tennessee gal after my own heart. Dolly is an icon in every sense of the word, with talent, style and a generous spirit.

Next is the southern cooking queen of Savannah, Ms. Paula Deen. Her drawl and hospitality, in addition to her tasty comfort food, keep folks coming back for more.

The fact that two southern ladies such as these were born on the same day is a special coincidence, but I’m glad they both were born and I’m sure glad we can celebrate them here together.

But what do you get for gals who have everything? Glad this is only a virtual party…no gifts required!

January is…

Everybody knows October is Halloween, November is Thanksgiving and December is Christmas. January 1 is New Year’s Day, but the festivities don’t last very long. February has Valentine’s Day and March St. Pat’s. But besides cold, dreary days, what does January have?

There aren’t really any fun January projects (unless you count putting away the holiday decorations or cleaning out the closets…please don’t say you count these as fun). There aren’t any holidays that warrant sweets or other cheery décor. Other than bundling up in bed with a few sleeping dogs and a good book, I just can’t seem to find any worthwhile January activities.

Surely you have some fun January traditions. If so, I’d love to hear about them! Maybe you have a special January event or happening that you want to share. Can anyone help me figure out what to do for the rest of the month? Even my dogs are beginning to get bored with me, I fear!

I’ll never forget meeting my fabulous friend Kristen at the Blissdom blogger conference last year. We were chatting and getting to know each other when she ask me if I’d heard of Pinterest. It was early 2011 and I had no idea what she was talking about. Little did I know….

A year, 21 boards and almost 500 pins later, I have embraced Pinterest with a vengeance. The virtual bulletin board of sorts is a wonderful way to keep track of projects, inspiration, recipes and just beautiful images.

Touring the Historic Tennessee Theatre

A week ago, the southern beau and I attended a behind-the-scenes tour of the historic Tennessee Theatre located on Gay Street in Knoxville, and I wanted to share some of the pictures I took of the gorgeous facility. Opening in 1928 as a silent movie house, it’s the Official State Theatre of Tennessee as well as listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The theatre is designed in the Spanish Moorish style, and was totally restored prior to its grand re-opening in 2005. Even down to the carpet pattern, styles and designs are as authentic as they could get to match what it would have been back in its hey day.

The first film to play at the Tennessee Theatre back in the 1920s was The Fleet’s In, staring the IT girl herself, Clara Bow. Since then the theatre has been a place to see movies, concerts, musicals and even hold your wedding or high school prom.

I was lucky enough to perform on the stage of the Tennessee Theatre while in college when my sorority competed in the annual All Sing competition. This was prior to the renovations, but it was still an awesome experience.

One of my best friends saw Les Miserables there this week and I’m trying not to be too jealous. It’s just such a wonderful venue to see a show. The grandeur of it sort of overtakes you and creates a really magical time.

About Face: The Oil Cleansing Method

Since my mom bought me my first tub of Noxzema, I’ve been a skincare product junkie…trying just about every new-fangled item on the market that promised to clean, clear and smooth my skin.

For the last couple of months, I’ve been following a new skincare regimen and wanted to share and see if anyone else has tried it (or been curious about trying it.) Dubbed the oil cleansing method (OCM) and explained in detail here, it involves using different oils to clean the skin on your face. After experimenting with the formula, I’ve decided that an equal mixture of castor and jojoba oil works best for me, with a few drops of tea tree oil mixed in.

So far, I’m really happy with the results. The oil cleansing method takes a little more effort than conventional face washing, but it’s worth it to me because my skin feels so much better. I’ve read some different bloggers’ experiences with the OCM, some great and some not so great. As with anything else, you (or your dermatologist) have to determine what works for you. I just know it’s been a really good change for my skin.

Some things I recommend if you do decide to try it:

-Buy good quality 100% oils. My first bottle of tea tree oil (from the Dollar General) was full of random ingredients, but I found better options at the Vitamin Shoppe.

-Make sure your hands are clean before you begin & make sure you remove all the oil from your skin afterward.

-You don’t need nearly as much oil as you think you do. (I estimate in the palm of my hand).

le fete de l’imagination: Happy 77th Birthday Elvis

Today would be Elvis Presley’s 77th birthday…which is kind of hard to believe because in my mind, he’s sort of stuck somewhere in icon land where nobody ages and fried peanut butter and banana sandwiches have no calories. {Speaking of, check out the fabulous Ezra Pound Cake’s take on E’s favorite snack…yum!}

I went through a HUGE Elvis phase when I was about 12 or 13. The TBS network used to dedicate an entire week to him called “Elvis Explosion” (eat your heart out Shark Week) during which it aired (and I watched) every Elvis movie ever made for seven days straight. I also read Priscilla’s biography “Elvis & Me” and it was quite the page-turner for my 13-year old self.

My junior high had a monthly newspaper and, for $.50, students could submit to each other song dedications which were published on the back page. My then-best friend and I racked our brains to choose the perfect songs to capture our deepest love and devotion to our 7th grade boyfriends. I selected none other than “Love me Tender,” thinking Elvis could best express my innermost tween angst. I recall that it was fairly well received.

I’m not sure why I chose to share this little anecdote today, but I made a resolution to share more personal things here on the blog and what’s more personal than an embarrassing story about adolescence?

Anyway, I’m going to play some Elvis songs today in honor of his birthday. My favorite is “Are you lonesome tonight?” and I’d love to hear what yours is, if you have a favorite.

Also, according to the official Elvis website, less than 50 cabins remain for the Elvis cruise…so if you were planning to go, you need to act fast.

Bird-Brained with Southern Belle Simple

In honor of January 5 being National Bird Day, I thought I’d share a few items that have recently caught my eye on Etsy, all sweetly sporting bird motifs.

This gorgeous cockatoo stencil if you like your birds big and bold.

Soft and sweet, this bird pillow comes in an assortment of colors and I love the little crown.

Maybe you’ve recently added a baby bird to your nest…this sterling bird necklace captures the sentiment for sure.

Or perhaps you have many secrets and need a place close to your heart to keep them…I’d love this antique silver purse necklace…wonder if it comes with a few secrets of its own?

Don’t the little chirpers in this sweet bird artwork seem to be enjoying themselves? I love God’s feathered creatures so much.

Only in the South: Cheap Tail

Every year one of my dear friends and I get together on Christmas Eve morning for a little breakfast, shopping and catching up. We usually make the rounds among a few antique stores in his quaint southern hometown and this year was no exception. We saw lots of great deals and I had to resist the urge to buy up some ironstone pieces I really liked. However, there was one item for sale I did not feel any urge to buy.

Only in the south would a little bundle of tails be nestled in with the antique potato mashers and egg beaters, just hanging on a peg. I’m not sure if the price tag referred to only one tail in the bunch or the if the whole lot of them would have been $2.50.

Perhaps someone more knowledgeable of the going price for tails can advise us as to whether or not this was a good deal.

Part of me really wanted to buy this and secretly tuck it in the stocking of an unsuspecting family member, but because I don’t love touching parts that have been removed from animals I can’t identify, I left it hanging there on its peg.

So what do y’all think?

Happy New Year from Southern Belle Simple

January 1, 2012 started out kind of gray and gloomy in my neck of the woods. The southern beau and I were enjoying a little New Year’s breakfast when a dark sky opened up and poured rain for a couple of hours. We mucked around in the rain for a bit and then out of nowhere the sun appeared and the gray sky changed to blue.

A new year gets everyone thinking about new beginnings. So often we judge things by how they begin. It’s hard not to put pressure on ourselves and feel discouraged if circumstances don’t seem to be headed in the way we want them to. I’m trying to remember, as my great-grandmother said to me once “that we must hoe each row all the way to the end,” even though it’s my tendency to get stuck somewhere in the middle.

This year I’m going to quit trying so hard at things that don’t matter and focus more on enjoying the things that do. I going to be my true self, even as I’m still figuring out who that is. I’m going for more quality, less quantity in the hope of living more in the moment rather than longing for the moments to come.

A gorgeous morning doesn’t guarantee a perfect day. Just like a perfect New Year’s doesn’t guarantee a great year. We often forget that the the darkest and gloomiest of mornings can sometimes turn into the loveliest of afternoons.

I hope you’ll join me this year in believing there are amazing times ahead, encouraging each other through the rainy days and celebrating the blue skies together.

Anti-Recipes: Black Eyed-Peas for New Years

The southern beau and I rang in the New Year with a hearty bowl of black eyed-peas for good luck in 2012. While I don’t really put too much stock in superstitions, we’ve carried out this tradition for years now and it’s a fun way to celebrate the evening.

We watched The Help (he hadn’t seen it yet) and I managed to stay awake (barely) until 12:01. I hope you had a wonderful New Year’s too. There’s still time to eat some peas (and hog’s jowl) today, if you’re so inclined.

Last night I met up with some fabulous local bloggers for a little dinner and friendly conversation. Some of the lovely ladies I’d met in person before and others were new friends, but we all had a great time and I’m excited to connect and support each other in this adventure.

Some of us are moms, some are wives, some pet owners, some artists, crafters and bakers. I would never have dreamed when I began writing a blog that my life would be so enriched by the friendships and connections I’ve made in the process, but it really has. Instead of competing against each other for readers and Facebook likes, bloggers, or at least the ones I’ve met, do support each other.

From the Southern Belle Simple Bookshelf: Homemade by Clodagh McKenna

I recently stumbled upon a wonderful book and ended up purchasing it as a little early Christmas gift to myself. Homemade by Clodagh McKenna is one of those volumes I’m sure I’ll refer to again and again as it is filled to the brim with wonderfully easy recipes and creative ideas.

McKenna is an Irish television personality and she just exudes girl next door charm. From her preserved lemons and Christmas chutney recipes to her thoughts about the importance of having picnics and keeping life simple, her book offers a little taste of what things are like in her world. It is beautifully designed and has enough pictures to satisfy even my picky tastes (what can I say…I like cookbooks with a lot of pictures).

You can also visit Clodagh’s website where she shares a ton of recipes and other info that is found in the book. Maybe I’m drawn to her because a part of me longs to connect with my Irish roots. I’m just glad I discovered her because I’ve already gotten quite a bit of inspiration from the book and site.

Only in the South: All-you-can-eat Breakfast with the Holy Family

My “Only in the South” posts are usually a bit humorous (or at least I intend for them to be), poking a bit of loving fun at the traditions and culture of my sweet south. This post is different. In a season that can so easily get derailed by the commercial aspects or stress of having to make everything just so, I’m glad there are places where the true meaning of Christmas is known and celebrated.

And only in the south is one of those places a Shoney’s All American Diner. There is one particular Shoney’s location in my town that is always decked out for each holiday. Maybe saying it’s decked out doesn’t convey the degree of décor I’m talking about, but just picture hundreds of giant snowflakes hanging from the ceiling, 8 ft Christmas trees in every room and a mural with polar bears frolicking in the snow.

All these things are nice and festive, but the life-size nativity is what really caught my attention. In a time when everyone seems so afraid of offending people or Heaven forbid, saying Merry Christmas to someone who might not believe in Christmas….I’m really happy that I could enjoy my bacon and eggs while the reason for the season is illustrated in the next room.

Small Traditions, Big Meaning

It’s beginning to feel a lot like Christmas in my neck of the woods and over the weekend, the southern beau and I enjoyed one of our favorite holiday season traditions. Every year we like to bundle up, grab a coffee or hot cocoa and drive around the neighborhood looking at the lights.

By now, most everybody who is going to has put up his or her Christmas tree and outdoor decorations. We like to make our way around and see what festive décor can be seen. There are certain houses we always look forward to because we know they’ll be decked out in holiday brilliance. Plus, there’s something about seeing a lit-tree twinkling in each home that reminds me how much we are all connected.

It might not be very glamorous, but it’s our tradition and we really look forward to it each year. That’s the thing about traditions…they can be anything really, as long as they are special to you. I love to hear people talk about their own meaningful traditions. Anytime they get that wistful look in their eyes and begin a sentence like “oh and we always…,” you know they are going to share a story that matters to them.

I’d love to hear about a simple, but important tradition your family enjoys together. What makes the holidays feel like the holidays to you?

A Treat for Santa from Southern Belle Simple

When Santa comes to my house this year, he won’t be getting milk and cookies…but it’s not because he’s been naughty. I recently stumbled upon the most delish concoction and I think Ol’ Saint Nick will love it. Plus it’s something the rest of us can enjoy in the meantime.

I’m not much of a milk drinker, but I love almond milk and will occasionally drink soymilk. This time of year, Silk (the almond- & soymilk company) brings out a couple of its seasonal flavors and one of them is pumpkin spice. I grabbed a carton of it at the store this week and had a glass last night. With a generous shaking of pumpkin pie spices on top, it was truly decadent.

Have any of you tried the seasonal Silk flavors? There’s also mint chocolate chip and an eggnog flavor (which I’ve never had). I only tasted soymilk for the first time a few years ago, and I really prefer almond milk. What about y’all? Any other pumpkin lovers out there who’ve had this treat or might give it a try? I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.

Celebrate the end of Prohibition with Bathtub Gin

On this day in 1933, the Eighteenth Amendment to the Constitution was repealed, ending the 13 year period of Prohibition in the United States. It’s so strange to think about a time when it was illegal for adults to drink alcohol.

To commemorate this day almost 80 years later, I wanted to share a truly wonderful product with you that was inspired by the days of speakeasies and Prohibition. Bathtub Gin is a line of jams and fruit spreads made with fresh fruits + liqueurs and other spirits. Created by two Nashville sisters who grew up helping their mom make homemade jams and preserves, the company has several flavor options and all are just so tasty.

November Round-up

On this last day of the month, I wanted to share a little list of things I’m thankful for…since I didn’t manage to do it each day (but I’ve enjoyed the ones of you who did!).

I’m thankful for…

my new job…even though it’s keeping me very busy and blogging has gotten pushed down a bit on the to-do list
my dogs…even when I come home to find chewed up feminine hygiene products and bath tissue (thankfully unused!)
my family…even when some of them drive me the tiniest bit crazy (love you all though)
my sweet southern beau…who tells me it’s ok to eat another piece of pie AND always takes out the garbage (what a keeper!)
my energy level which is improving as I introduce more and more healthy foods into my diet
the love and friendship of all my blog/twitter/Facebook/Blissdom buddies…you make my days brighter

Now are we ready for December and the excitement it brings? I guess come tomorrow, we’ll find out!

Earlier this week I traveled across the state to Nashville for an event I just couldn’t miss. After the much-anticipated release of her first book, Grace Bonney of Design*Sponge has been doing a book tour and the West Elm store in Nashville was one of the stops on her agenda.

Not only was I able to meet Grace (who is tiny in real life) and get a copy of the book signed, I attended a special pre-book signing event where we were able to complete a fun little craft from the book. I took my mom along for the adventure and we had a blast.

We were all encouraged to take silly pictures in front of that bright backdrop and they should be posted on the Design*Sponge Facebook page. I’m going to do another post detailing the craft, but you might be wondering about the giveaway.

147 Years After the Burning of Atlanta

I don’t remember the first time I saw Gone with the Wind as a child nor all the subsequent viewings thereafter (there were many), but I vaguely remember the first time I saw it after learning that many aspects of the story’s setting and background happenings had really taken place once upon a time.

Probably the scene which had the most impact on me as a child was the burning of Atlanta by Sherman and his men. I’d be on the edge of my seat watching as Rhett tried to coax that poor horse, with Scarlett’s shawl over its eyes, through the depot as the flames leapt around them. Even though I knew they’d make it, I always watched as if anything could happen.

You might wonder why I’m mentioning this today. On November 15, 1864 General William Sherman and his men left the scorched ruins of Atlanta and began their march to the sea. To be clear, I’m no Civil War scholar…just your average southern girl with a blog celebrating life in the south. Those were dark times in our nation’s history…not the first, not the last, but they helped shape what the south was to become, some good and some not so good. I like President Herbert Hoover’s quote in which he states “the supreme purpose of history is a better world.”

Thankfully the fair city of Atlanta rebuilt. It’s home to Coca-Cola, the Braves and Julia Sugarbaker…to me, it doesn’t get much better than that.

Fall Fun in the South

It was one of those perfect fall weekends with just enough productivity to make you feel accomplished, but also enough frivolity to give your mind, body and spirit a little refresh.

Friday evening I enjoyed dinner with my brother in which he kept me utterly entertained with his colorful commentary on religion, politics and other current events. It’s so strange for me, having always seen him as my ‘little brother,’ to think of him as a grown-up, but I’m so proud of the grown-up he has become. He’ll be graduating from college in a few weeks and my family is looking forward to celebrating the event.

Saturday morning I ran some errands and then met my sweet friend Hannah B. (from Secrets of a Belle) for lunch and an estate sale. For someone like me who comes from a family of ~~hoarders~~ collectors, it’s safe to say I probably visited my first estate sale in utero…but Miss H was more of a novice. Have no fear though….she got right in and found several treasures that I hope she’ll feature on her fabulous blog sometime. My finds were a couple random kitchen items, including a vintage FireKing relish dish (like the one pictured, which is available on Etsy).

Sunday, the southern beau & I enjoyed a fun day together which started with a ‘Dixie biscuit’ {see below} and ended with watching a silly 90s movie on Netflix. All in all, it was a great weekend.

Anti-Recipes: Lentil & Spinach Chowder

Soup is my favorite thing to enjoy for dinner after a long day, especially when the weather gets a little chilly. The only problem with soup & blogs is that some folks don’t think it makes very pretty pictures…but I promise what this chowder lacks in beauty, it makes up for it in taste. It’s really easy and can be altered to fit your preferences (which is how I cook everything…recipe, schmecipe).

The Anti-Recipe:

3 cups dried lentils
tomato sauce (I used a batch of my roasted tomato sauce which had been frozen, but you could use readymade from a jar just as easily)
1 serving sized bottle of store-bought green juice (mine was cucumber, celery, lemon & spinach)
handful of pasta (I used quinoa pasta for the first time and it was yummy!)
1 Vidalia onion (or some other type) quartered
fresh spinach (3 or so cups)

Cook the lentils according to the package, but use the green juice instead of water. If you need to add some water, that’s fine. As they get tender, stir in the tomato sauce and onion. Simmer this for a bit and add the pasta (if you like). Just make sure there is enough liquid to cook the pasta and the beans unless you really like to chew. Season it up to your liking and when everything is the consistency you want, ladle it out into bowls over fresh spinach leaves. The heat from the soup wilts the spinach and makes for a really good taste.

{Fyi: I came up with this soup from things I had on hand…that’s the beauty of soup. Be brave with your cooking my friends…who knows when an experiment gone-right will become your favorite dish!}

Put a ring on it…napkins

I ran across this little treasure while thrifting recently with my momma and I wanted to share. Miller’s was an iconic southern department store with flagship locations in Chattanooga and Knoxville, TN…both of which were established in the early 1900s.

The box alone is a blast from the past, but the napkin rings inside are simply precious. They probably weren’t expensive, but I’d like to think they made a sweet wedding present or housewarming gift for a local belle.

I’m guessing they are from the 50s or 60s, but they could be newer. It’s so strange how the simple act of using a cloth napkin makes a meal feel so much more special. And dressing up my cloth napkins with a little something shiny only adds to that special experience.

That Thorns have Roses

November means Thanksgiving and all the wonderful food and celebrating that comes along with it. I want to spend some time this month thinking about what it means to be truly thankful. Even the words “be thankful” can sound trite, but not so when there is genuine feeling and meaning behind them. I have a dear friend who posts a thankful list on Facebook each day…just 2 or 3 things from that day she is thankful for. It’s not a huge thing, but it certainly makes me smile and always reminds me there are things we can see as blessings, especially where we least expect them.

Will you join me in looking for things to be thankful for this month? Who knows…maybe we’ll making being thankful a year-round activity!

Witch’s Brew Wishes & Candy Corn Dreams

My house has been decorated for Halloween since around October 1st, but it’s possible we get into the holiday more than other folks.

This little crow has been part of my décor for a few years now and this year he found a nice spot on an Eiffel tower lamp. Some small antique glass bottles give a spooky effect as they can be imagined to hold potions and other mysterious concoctions.

These bottles actually started out clear, but certain elements present in the glass caused them to turn purple over the years as they were exposed to ultraviolet light. Many people collect this ‘sun-colored amethyst’ glass.

No Halloween is complete with candy corn and the rest of Brach’s sugary harvest mix. My great-grandmother’s carnival glass compote makes a perfect spooky candy dish.

White pumpkins add an unexpected touch, just watch out for the spiders crawling all over them. And after our visit to the real-live pumpkin patch, the southern beau and I finally carved our punkins yesterday….can you guess which one is mine & which is his? ;)

Fall Fun at the Pumpkin Patch

My southern beau and I get pretty excited about Halloween and this year he wanted us to visit a real pumpkin patch. We’ve done ‘pumpkin patches’ before, but they were the kind where all the pumpkins have been set out in a field…as opposed to actually growing there.

There was still a bit of that at the patch we went to, but many of those little orange babies were still clinging to the vine! I felt like such a kid running around trying to select the perfect ones.

We also saw these rascals who were alertly guarding the patch. The dog wasn’t easily convinced, but Mr. Goat fell in love with me once I gave him corn and a few licks of my sorghum lollipop.

All the pumpkins made it home with only one instance of stem breakage and they are patiently waiting to be carved.

Did you get a pumpkin this year? Did it grow in a patch or do you prefer more lasting varieties (i.e. ceramic)?

Holiday Cards from Shutterfly

Last year I was contacted by the kind folks at Shutterfly and offered some free Christmas cards in exchange for a post. At that time I’d never ordered cards from them before and didn’t want to recommend anything I hadn’t used. We ended up buying our cards from them and I gave the promo code away to a lucky reader.

This year I was contacted by Shutterfly again and provided with codes for 2 lucky readers to win 25 free cards. As someone who always made her family’s cards each year, it’s so nice to be able to upload a picture and be done with it. Not to say getting that perfect picture is ever easy, but at least half the battle’s won!

These are some of my favorite card designs…especially the retro ones with cute fonts. There’s nothing cookie cutter about Shutterfly’s designs, many of which allow you to customize color and messages.

Sterling Souvenirs

Some people go on vacation and relax by the shore…I do enjoy a bit of relaxing, but my favorite vacation pastime is thrifting! This way, while those relaxing, shore-sitting people come home with a t-shirt or mug, I come home with vintage ironstone and silverware. My most recent trip resulted in some new-old treasures I wanted to share.

I was attracted to the spoon because of its twisting design and thought it might be perfect for serving some type of sauce or jam out of a little dish (condiment jars never go directly on the table…per my southern belle grandmother’s way).

I snatched up the silver plate butter spreader because of its S monogram (for my last name) and the simple pattern allows it to easily mesh with my other silverware.

The relish fork is a piece of ‘hotel silver’ (presumably from the Hotel Rowe in Grand Rapids, Michigan) . I don’t have any particular connection with the hotel, but I liked this piece because I’ve always wanted some hotel silver and never stumbled upon any ‘til now.

The finds of the trip were these curious little forks which I think would also have been used for pickles or other relish items. The one on the left has a golden tint and is marked “Montagne Italy.” The back has a tiny fleur de lis, but these boogers were just so hard to photograph.

The right fork is my favorite…only about 3.5 inches in length with a small figure on the end. It sort of looks like a mermaid (or perhaps a baby, wrapped up?). Anytime I find something so unique, I am intrigued about where it came from and who might have used it. Have any of you seen any utensils like these before? I’d love to know more about them.

Easy DIY Chalkboard Gifts

I’ve played around with chalkboard spray paint in the past…once turning an average wall mirror into a cute kitchen message board. This time I used chalkboard paint to make a few easy gifts and I think they turned out pretty cute.

First, these little gift tags. I guess I should share that all these items came from the clearance bin at Hobby Lobby. The tags started out with different kinds of veggies painted on them, but since I liked the shape more than the original design, I decided to make them chalkboards instead. These could be used as actual gift tags or I was even thinking personalized Christmas ornaments.

Next was this metal wall art…once again I wasn’t a huge fan of the original painted design, but, spray-painted with chalkboard paint, the metal makes a nice little message board, both for chalk and magnets.

I love how chalkboard paint makes it so easy to create a new use for something, especially when it’s a steal of a deal. I’m always on the lookout for items I can transform. Have you made anything crafty lately?

Anti-Recipe: Halloween Candy Corn Bark

Sweet and salty combinations are just the greatest when it comes to snacking so I decided to whip up a batch of white chocolate bark with candy corn and pretzels. The recipe is so easy and the best part about it is you can make as much or little as you want. This comes in handy for me since I’m trying to eat healthier and I knew if I had made a whole lot of it, I’d also have eaten a whole lot of it.

Ingredients:

pretzels (I used the small square grid variety of Kroger brand pretzels)
white chocolate chips
candy corn
tiny bit of cooking oil

1. Spread out a layer of pretzels and candy corn on a sheet of waxed paper (on your counter or a clean baking sheet).

2. Add a tiny bit of oil to the white chips and melt them slowly, either over low heat on the stove or in short increments via your microwave.

3. When the white chocolate is smooth and liquefied, pour it over the pretzels and candy corn. A thin coating is plenty for the sweet/salty combo but if you want to use more white chips for thicker pieces of bark you can break, go for it.

**Note: My measurements were about 3 servings of pretzels and candy corn (as specified on the packages) and then 3 tablespoons of chips…so the whole batch could be divided into 3 servings of about 300 calories each. Not the healthiest, but it is a special occasion treat!

An Apple A Day…

Who else is enjoying the crop of apples available right now, especially the Honeycrisps? I’ve been eating one almost every day for the past week and they are just so delicious. Apples are considered one of the “dirty dozen,” a.k.a. fruits you should try to buy organic whenever possible. Even if you peel them, it’s possible to get some not-so-great chemicals from the non-organic ones. If you can get them organic from a local farm, even better!

Sometimes I like to have a little something sweet after dinner and apples fit the bill. My favorite way to enjoy them is with a couple tablespoons of peanut butter, but sometimes I melt a handful of chocolate chips and dip the apple slices in that. What’s your favorite way to eat an apple?

Friday Flashback: Billys Tap Room

Yesterday’s post mentioned something we did on vacation that I’d been dreaming of doing since childhood. While visiting Ormond Beach as a kid, we had a few choice dining spots, but they were mostly on the budget-friendly side. One year my parents and grandparents went to dinner (grown-ups only) at a place called Billy’s Tap Room and after that I’ve always wanted to eat there.

This lead glass cabinet near the door contains personalized nameplates for regulars who might want to call ahead and reserve a table.

The restaurant started out as The Tea Room in 1922. Billy MacDonald was the lounge manager at the Astor and Plaza Hotels in New York City and was invited by the owners of the beautiful Ormond Beach Hotel to move to Florida and manage the restaurant for them. After a few years, Billy bought a building on Granada Boulevard and moved The Tea Room, changing the name to Billy’s Tap Room & Grill.

In the early years, Billy’s sold fruits, jellies, newspapers, sandwiches and gifts. It evolved into a bar and full-service restaurant, where, in 1937, you could get draft beer for a nickel. Over the years the restaurant went through several owners, even closing for a time but it’s now reopened and restored to its original glory.

We took my mom there for her birthday dinner and it was quite the experience. I don’t think there are many places like Billy’s left…where going out to dinner still feels like a treat and not just something you do to get out of cooking. If you’re ever in Ormond Beach, definitely give it a try.

Grandeur in ruin {traveling adventures}

When you’ve vacationed in the same place for your entire life (in my case Ormond Beach, Florida) it can often be challenging to find new and different things to do. This most recent trip (last week) I managed to experience two new things…one of which I had dreamed about since childhood and the other I’d only recently discovered.

The childhood dream was visiting a certain landmark restaurant, but I’ll share more about that a little later. The other new thing we saw was an historical site we’d never heard of: the Calle Grande colonnade and arches.

In 1926, Walter C. Hardesty developed and built a luxury subdivision in Ormond Beach called Rio Vista on the Halifax. Hardesty made his fortune in manufacturing, creating arts and craft-style furniture in Dover, Ohio. By 1927 Rio Vista had a large hotel, 38 homes and more than 15 miles of paved roads. Hardesty wanted the experience of driving up to the site to be breathtaking so he constructed a set of formal marble arches as well as 20 columns on either side of the entrance, strategically positioned by a small canal.

We couldn’t believe the effort that must have gone into creating these gorgeous structures. If you’re wondering what happened to Rio Vista and Mr. Hardesty’s dreams as a real estate mogul, everything pretty much halted with the stock market collapse and the Depression. But these ruins still serve as a reminder of a grander time. And to think they have been there all these years right under our noses.

Resting Well, Well Rested

I must have had a hankering for some tasty sleep of my own because a short nap around 6:30 last night turned into not waking up again until morning. Sometimes we just need to sleep and our bodies have funny ways of telling us.

Do you sleep when you’re tired or do you lay the guilt on yourself, 20 mattresses thick, that sleep can wait when your to-do list is long? I’m working on more of the former, less of the latter (but this is obvious by my 13 hour siesta!).

Bringing Butchering Back with @PRButcher

I always love to see a new business get started, especially when it’s one that offers amazing products. I met the guys of Porter Road Butcher at the Southern Artisan Cheese Fest and if you are ever in East Nashville, you should look them up.

Local and regional meats are a huge priority of theirs, to support the livelihoods of farmers in this area. Porter Road Butcher gets whole animals and butchers them on-site, which, according to my grandpa (a retired butcher) and Mr. Alan Benton, is quite a skill because “hardly anyone knows how to butcher anymore.”

We were treated to their Tennessee Pate at the Cheese fest…something like spam on steroids….or a little slice of heaven on a Ritz cracker. I look forward to seeing Porter Road Butcher thrive and can’t wait to taste more of their delicious offerings.

Sugary Sweetness with @Bangcandyco at the @SthrnCheeseFest

Friday was the first ever Southern Artisan Cheese Festival and I was lucky enough to attend. The event was held at the Nashville Farmer’s Market and the clear fall evening made a perfect setting for foodies to mingle with food creators and taste their wares. In addition to all the delicious cheeses, I sampled many other local artisanal products from local folks.

My favorite beverage from the event would have to be the cocktail made for me by Sarah Souther of the Bang Candy Company. Sarah started her business after concocting a killer batch of homemade marshmallows and decided to run with them. She also makes simple syrups that are delish. Here’s a great little write-up on Sarah from the Tennessean. I didn’t try one of her homemade marshmallows, but the syrup was divine.

For the cocktails, we were asked to select a syrup for Sarah to then mix with prosecco (a sparkling white wine) or fizzy water and other ingredients. I chose the Hibiscus orange flower ginger syrup for mine.

It really didn’t need any extra fixings except an orange wedge and my festive creation was finished. I so enjoyed meeting Sarah and chatting with her about the upcoming opening of her new shop. She’s @Bangcandyco on twitter so send her some love!

Friday Flashback: Hoskins Drug Store

One of my favorite spots to visit when I have a little time and want to get away for the day is nearby Clinton, Tennessee. I’ve already shared some of our previous adventures there.

Our most recent trip was this past weekend and we ended up eating at the lunch counter inside the quaint Hoskins Drug Store. This image was taken at Hoskins in 1947 and it still looks very much the same today. I ordered a pimento cheese sandwich and it was oh so yum!

Now I’m kicking myself for not having soup…if only to see this soup-o-matic contraption put to use. Wonder how much the price has gone up from 15 cents.

Yes, I know another picture of my sandwich probably isn’t necessary, but it may have been one of the best pimento cheeses I’ve ever had.

My hometown is seriously lacking a spot like Hoskins, but I’m glad there are still a few holdouts scattered around the area where foodies and nostalgia-types like me can enjoy the view. Do you have a spot like this in your town?

Last Hurrah…at the Fair

When I was growing up, the county fair always fell around the time school started back, even though it was still technically summer. I guess this is what makes me think of the fair as summer’s last hurrah. This year I visited the Tennessee Valley Fair, in my adopted hometown as opposed to the smaller county fair where I grew up. Thankfully, this bigger fair still had the same staples I was expecting, and even a bit of small town whimsy.

Upon entering the gate, I ran smack dab into this fellow and he was gracious enough to pose for a photo.

From old time beverages to prize winning vegetables, the fair was a feast for the senses as well as the palate.

I’m so ready for fall and Halloween so seeing these beautiful pumpkins definitely got me excited!

Most of the watermelons we enjoyed this summer were the smaller round variety, but this gigantic beauty is deserving of its blue ribbon.

Fried goodness tempted me at every turn, but I was able to snap this picture without compromising my diet. I don’t know who invented funnel cake, but I’d like to thank him (or her).

The last adventure of the day was a stroll through the goat barn where much cuteness ensued.

An Impromptu Interview with Allan Benton

So yesterday I promised to share a little bit more about Mr. Allan Benton, proprietor of Benton’s Smoky Mt. Country Hams. Maybe you haven’t heard of him, but if this is the case you might be in the ever-decreasing minority. Several years ago, Gourmet Magazine’s John T. Edge wrote a feature on Mr. Benton and spent some time with him in New York visiting with chefs who were using his products. At that time the concept of scallops in a Benton’s ham consommé might have been a novel one, but now you’d be hard-pressed to find a chef who isn’t familiar with Benton’s cured offerings and/or using them in his or her creations.

Events like Bacon Fest probably wouldn’t even take place if it weren’t for him. But you won’t be able to convince him of this. Alright, I guess I’m getting ahead of myself. While the southern beau and I were stuffing our faces Saturday evening, I noticed someone had taken the seat beside me. Imagine my shock to turn around and see Mr. Allan Benton. I’m sure my eyes were as big as saucers as I turned back to the beau and mouthed (as inconspicuously as I could muster) “OH MY GOSH…THAT’S HIM.” Subtle, huh?

Over the next hour or so, Mr. Benton chatted with us and graciously answered my questions. He told me about how he had started out to be a school teacher, quitting when he realized he would have been teaching in the 2^nd-lowest paid county in the lowest paid state. He said he starting curing meat as something to do in the meantime “until he figured out what he wanted to be.” He said he still hasn’t figured this out. We talked about how pork, which once was simply a sustenance food, is now considered such a delicacy and how he owes his success to the creativity of others…like the chefs who fed us at Bacon Fest, folks who are always coming up with new ways to enjoy pork.

He spoke of how people today don’t really know how to butcher, a complaint I heard my grandfather, a long-time Kroger butcher, make in the years before he retired. When I asked Mr. Benton if he ate bacon every day, he said that while he could eat some variation of pork every day, he mainly lived on cheddar cheese and peanut butter (a man after my own heart). He (wisely) told us his wife is the world’s best bacon cook and that the secret to good bacon isn’t really in the kind of skillet you use, but instead that you “play with it a little bit” while cooking. We conversed about gravy (red eye vs. sausage), kill’t lettuce (something we both love), and his facility in Madisonville, Tennessee (a place he assured us we’d find underwhelming).

The whole experience was such a treat and I left the event on cloud nine. Some people might feel this way after meeting a movie star or television personality…I guess that’s how I’m different from some people. I’m making plans to visit Benton’s, hopefully during a time when Mr. Benton will be around. He said he only spends about 75 hours a week there. But they say if you choose a career you love, you’ll never work a day in your life. Maybe that’s why Allan Benton doesn’t think he’s found his career path yet…making bacon just comes so naturally for him it doesn’t feel like a job.

When I first visited Europe about 10 years ago, I would try to tell the people I met where I was from. Only when I’d say “Jack Daniels” would Tennessee have a sticking point with them. I’m sure it’s only a matter of time before saying “Benton’s bacon” will put me on the map.

Highlights of #KnoxBaconFest

This past weekend was one for the books, including an event on my calendar I had been eagerly awaiting for a quite a while…Baconfest! Taking place in my fair city for the 3rd year in a row, this was the first time the southern beau and I were in attendance. Hosted by Mockingbird Events, Baconfest is a celebration of all things pork, made up of different festive happenings throughout the weekend.

While all the components sounded fun, we decided to attend the Bar Food & Cocktail party, which was Saturday night at Knoxville’s Public House. We ate, we drank, we conquered. {WARNING: gratuitous bacon pics to follow}

BLT Stacks…Bacon, chicken livers, & heirloom tomatoes on rye

Chocolate caramel tarts with sea salt & candied bacon

Those first three dishes were created by Ben and Amy Willis-Becker, owners of Harry’s Delicatessen. All their offerings were delish, but the chocolate caramel tarts were absolutely to-die-for.

Next were the creations of Stanton Webster, local chef and advocate of Tennessee Agricultural products. They included a southern style crostini with spicy eggplant & Benton’s bacon relish, Murray’s goat cheese & Benton’s country ham salad on a buttermilk biscuit, and my favorite, confit trout with sweet onion mayo on blue corn chips. You’d have been embarrassed for us if you could have seen the stack of empty cornhusk serving plates on our table at the end of the night! …but when it comes to bacon, we have no shame.

One final treat from Mr. Webster was the cheese straws (a southern staple) made with Murray’s extra sharp cheddar and candied Benton’s bacon, served in those adorable paper cones.

The next chef who treated us with delicacies was Matt Gallaher. He not only cooks for our state’s fine governor, but also tours with/cooks for the band Kings of Leon. His appetizer of Muddy Pond sorghum & Benton’s bacon cracker jacks was the perfect mix of salty and sweet.

Last, but certainly not least, we enjoyed small bites from Holly Hambright, chef extraordinaire. Once I realized her pig-shaped shortbread cookies weren’t just for decoration, I made one of them feel right at home on my plate. Other yumminess from Holly included Benton’s ham hock tamales with red eye tomato gravy, a tart with fennel, Vidalia onions, sauerkraut, tomatoes and bacon and s’mores sticks.

You might be wondering how our pants fit after this evening of pigging out, but somehow we managed. If you’ve noticed the common ingredient in many of the dishes I mentioned being from Benton’s, well that’s true too. And if you’re not all baconed out from today’s post, tune in tomorrow for the inside scoop on Mr. Alan Benton…who happened to dine right next to yours truly (my little foodie heart skipped a beat!).

You may have seen the list of words (see below) going around among bloggers and the accompanying video-blogs they have created pronouncing them. The list includes words that can sound vastly different when said with different accents.

I thought about doing an accent vlog of my own, and I still might, but what’s more interesting to me is hearing the accents of the folks who taught me to speak. Since I spent a great deal of time with her when I was little, my grandmother (Me-me) seemed a logical choice. She was a good sport about it all, plus today is her birthday so send her some love if you get a chance!

Rollin’ down a backwoods Tennessee byway

Our nation’s first highway (Lincoln) may have come to be in the 1920s, but it’s our second stretch of transcontinental road that means the most to me. U.S. Route 70 (named Lee Hwy in honor of Robert E.) runs from eastern North Carolina to east-central Arizona. Pre-dating the interstate system, Highway 70 was once called the Broadway of America and even reached downtown Los Angeles in its early days.

It might seem strange to have a soft spot for a road, but I do. My great-grandfather worked on the construction of Hwy 70 between his home of Monterey, Tennessee and Nashville. Just a young teenager at the time, but the eldest of several siblings with a widowed mother, my grandpa hauled concrete and rocks to earn a man’s wage to support his family.

He later walked this road many times over from Monterey to Baxter, Tennessee, where he met and married my great-grandmother.

I don’t always take time to stop and enjoy the view, but yesterday I had a few minutes so we got off I-40 at Monterey and continued the last 17.5 miles to my hometown on the back roads (aka Hwy 70). It was a gorgeous day and a memory I’ll definitely tuck away for safe-keeping.

Stage & Screen, #GWTW75 via @clarencebrown

This week has definitely been a busy one, but Wednesday the southern beau and I managed to make it to the theatre, which for me is a rare treat. The show we saw, Moonlight and Magnolias, was delightful and I encourage anyone, especially fans of “Gone with the Wind” to see it if you have a chance.

The play tells the true story of the 5 chaotic days in which David O. Selznick, Victor Fleming, and Ben Hecht (producer, director and writer, respectively) turn Margaret Mitchell’s classic book into a screenplay fit for film.

The catch is that Ben Hecht, the so-called writer, hasn’t read the book. The only logical solution is for Selznick and Fleming to act it out for him, chapter by chapter as Hecht types furiously to capture the action. At one point, the actor playing Fleming simultaneously portrays Melanie giving birth AND Prissy coming back without Dr. Meade, high-pitched southern accents and all. Needless to say, hilarity ensues.

We even got discounted tickets by volunteering to usher. If going to the theatre isn’t in your budget right now, I definitely advise checking on opportunities such as this (as well as free final dress rehearsals and discounted previews) that your local theatre might offer.

A Night on the Town with @moderninkmag

This past Saturday, I attended a launch party for the second issue of Modern Ink Magazine, a fabulous new digital mag whose founders happen to call my my sweet southern city home. The magazine is published quarterly and both the premiere issue and the most recent one have been a real feast for the eyes.

The party was held at the Public House, a cheeky little establishment on the edge of Knoxville’s ‘Old City.’ The menu includes more than your typical bar fare, and we especially enjoyed the popcorn in truffle oil and the charcuterie board with offerings from the famous Benton’s Hams.

I was excited to meet the lovely founders, Rachel Wood Turner (left, and also pictured below at right with her fabulous sis-in-law Claire Balest, who contributes as the magazine’s beauty editor) and Allison Sprouse (right).

The ladies were so gracious to invite the public out for this fun event and my southern beau and I enjoyed it very much. We had another special connection with this particular issue of the magazine because a quote of mine about my sweetie was published in it. {pg. 143 of the Fall issue if you’re curious}

Other gorgeousness from the issue includes sneak peeks into the homes of some very creative folks and a photo shoot of Nebraska that left me longing to visit the Cornhusker state.

Shopping at Thorn & Thistle

This weekend I visited the newly opened Turkey Creek Public Market, a huge indoor flea market-ish shopping destination in Knoxville, Tennessee. As with anything where there are many different booths, only some of them really caught my eye. My favorite vendor shop was ‘Thorn & Thistle’ where the delightful BB was selling her wares.

From the first glimpse of this fabulous booth, I knew it wasn’t like the others. First of all, it contained items that appeared very thoughtfully chosen. Also, it was curated in a way that really showcased everything.

I knew I’d like it there when I mentioned I was a collector of ironstone and BB rounded up several pieces for me to look at.

She said her dream was to have a store with beautiful items in a price range she and her friends could afford. Done and done! I got 2 small ironstone pieces (a creamer and a fruit bowl) for less than $20!

I could have spent all day looking at every item, but it was almost closing time so we moved along. I will definitely be returning to the Thorn and Thistle booth as the inventory is always changing, so you just never know what you’ll happen upon.

By the way, here’s a creamer just like the one I got (for $8!). My collection is growing, Lord help us.

Vacation, All I Ever Wanted

All the seersucker and linen might be packed away and summer gone with it, but there’s still a tiny part of me holding out. Noticeably absent from my summer this year was an official vacation…so, when given the opportunity to spend a few days in Florida next month, I jumped at the chance.

Until I can get to the Sunshine State, I’m feasting my eyes on some vintage vacation photos I found on Flickr.

There’s no combination like water skis and tutus! I just hope I can find a suitcase large enough to hold my hoopskirt!

Anti-Recipe: Tomato Tart

I made this yummy tomato tart over the weekend and it was so easy I thought I’d share. As my first foray into the world of puff pastry, I wasn’t sure what to expect, but following the directions on the box worked out just fine. The recipe is from my friend Nealey (of Dixie Caviar & the Kitchn) if you want the specifics.

Basically just mix some mayo with shredded cheeses, spread it over the defrosted puff pastry and then top with thin tomato slices before baking. My variations include using just mozzarella cheese and substituting plain Greek yogurt for the mayo the original recipe calls for. This dish was best when piping hot from the oven, but reheated okay. Just be sure and drain the tomatoes first or things will get pretty juicy.

I’ve got another sheet of puff pastry I’m going to attempt a mushroom and onion tart with, so we’ll see how that goes. Happy Tuesday friends! Hope everyone had a restful Labor Day!

Chic is…

I just finished watching this video and it really made me think. In it, Jared Goss, curator of modern art for the Met, speaks about different works of art throughout history and whether or not they are chic.

Chic is definitely something I am guilty of aspiring to, although by Goss’ definition (and perhaps this is true), being chic must be effortless and unsought-after. Goss says it just has to be.

The chic-est person I’ve met lately is for sure Ms. Beverly Bremer of Atlanta. I met her while on a visit to her eponymous silver shop in Buckhead and if you haven’t been, it’s a must!

Do you consider yourself chic? If yes, what makes you so? If not, do you know anyone truly chic? Goss speaks about a certain ‘veneer of perfection’ that accompanies chic-ness, and that goes along somewhat with the experience we try to create here in the south. Probably the reason I’ll never be chic is that it requires understated elegance and I’ve always fancied myself to be a little over the top.

Starting tomorrow, I’m going to be celebrating Better Breakfast Month. My goal is to make more of an effort to eat a better breakfast each day.

There aren’t any rules about what constitutes ‘better.’ For you, it might mean simply eating breakfast, where you didn’t before. It might be adding fruit or just cutting out an extra cup of coffee. A Toast to Marshmallows

I’m trying to slow down these days and appreciate the small joys in life. That includes random obscure holidays that might not cause the banks to close, but are fun just the same. Wedded Bliss: Southern Style

I already did my post for today, but then I ran across some gorgeous images and couldn’t help but share them! This is one of the sweetest weddings I’ve seen in a long time. From the whimsical sign directing guests to the bridesmaids dresses and flowers, I’m smitten.

Talk about a bridesmaid dress you could wear again! I love how they aren’t identical but when grouped together, they make such a sweetly unified statement. And the bride’s bouquet of vintage brooches? LOVE. IT.

At around 12 years old, I starting experimenting with make-up and asked to wear it regularly. I’ll never forget my mom taking me to the Dollar General store and buying me a giant blue tub of Noxzema. She told me how important it was to wash my face each night and take good care of my skin. This is somewhat ironic because she often sleeps in her make-up, but her skin always looks great.

When I opened that first tub, the smell was so distinct. I don’t remember buying Noxzema in years, but I ran across some of these wipes in my bathroom the other night and used one to clean my face. It was so crazy how the smell was exactly the same as I remembered it, even in a wipe-form.

Did you grow up using Noxzema or some other iconic skincare product? Do you still swear by it or have you declared your loyalties elsewhere?

Going Greek

Yesterday was Bid Day for the sororities at the University of Tennessee and I attended my college chapter’s celebration with some other alums. If you weren’t sure from the pic, I was a Zeta. One neat thing about blogging is that I’ve connected with other ZTA ladies I never would have known. Even just the other day, I discovered I had this in common with a sweet blogger friend.

I’m a big fan of Amy Adams and since tomorrow is her birthday, I thought we’d end the work-week with a little virtual soiree celebrating her! You might think of her as the girl from Enchanted or Julie&Julia, but my favorite Amy Adams film is distinctly southern, hence featuring her here on the blog.

If you haven’t seen Junebug, you definitely should…although be warned it isn’t a romantic comedy. It tells the story of a regular family facing the ups and downs of life in North Carolina and how they react when their son returns home from New York with his posh new wife. When I first saw this sad, beautiful movie, I was so mesmerized by Adams’ character in it. I thought she was surely from the south with how she captured the accent and everything.

For her party, I think we’ll enjoy the season’s tomato bounty with a yummy tomato tart, recipe & image via the fabulous Ezra Poundcake!

We can wash it down with this delicious peach tea (recipe here) and just enjoy each other’s company!

And as a whimsical treat, I think Amy will love this little June bug ring (which is actually sold out on Etsy…but this is only an imaginary party).

Sculpture with a Point

As a child, my favorite thing about school starting each fall was picking out school supplies. There is something about crisp new sheets of paper and perfect pencils that makes a person feel reborn. When I ran across these pencil creations, I thought they fit perfectly as today is the first day of school for many folks. My No.2 pencils never looked anything like this!

These intricate creations remind me of my grandfather who sometimes whittled and would always sharpen pencils for me with his pocket knife, which pleased me to no end.

I love people who can take an ordinary everyday object and turn it into something magical. Who would have guessed a simple pencil could be transformed in such a way. Have any of y’all seen this before?

Ankle boots: Yay or Nay

It seems like ankle boots are going to be one big trend for the upcoming season and I’m definitely in the market for a new pair of fall/winter shoes. What do you all think about this style?

Some fashions are great in theory, but don’t translate very well to the average Joe or Jane. I definitely want something that combines quality, style and comfort for a reasonable price (demanding, much?).

These boots look very vintage to me, like something my great-grandmother might have worn as a little girl. I’m curious if any of you lovelies have seen/tried them or maybe even brought a pair home. Please share!

I’m Simply Mad for Mad Men

I have a confession to make….my name is Kate and I’m now completely obsessed with Mad Men. It isn’t even funny how late I am to this party, but since last week I’ve managed to watch a respectable number of episodes (from the series premiere to the beginning of season 3). I always thought the show looked interesting, but now I’m utterly engrossed in it.

These vintage drink ads are an homage to the illustrious team at Sterling Cooper…see Don’s signature old-fashioned above? Part of the show’s appeal to me is the glamour, but also how it seems like a cultural anthropology lesson.

The drinking and womanizing can be a bit much at times, but overall I’m pretty invested in the characters. Who else is sold on the show? I’m hoping to get all caught up before the newest season airs on television. Let’s talk Mad Men…but no spoilers please!

Were vs Are

I saw this book at Borders over the weekend and skimmed through it while waiting on my sister. I didn’t buy it, but I think I will end up ordering it because it had some great stuff inside. I try to keep SBS fun and since diets are not typically fun, they aren’t really a topic I discuss on here.

This post isn’t exactly about diets though…it’s more about the idea of who we are now vs. who we were as teenagers. The fittest I’ve ever been in my life was in high school when I was playing soccer, but even then I had a distorted sense of my body (i.e. I thought I was huge). Only now am I beginning to learn about what it means for my body to be healthy and what it takes to achieve that health.

While flipping through this book, I kept wishing I could give it to my teenage self. It’s not a fad diet, just basic smart ideas about healthy eating and being active. Even though I can’t change my teenage self, I’m hoping my 29-year old self will make her proud!

Anti-Recipe: Peachy Onion Salad

I enjoyed this colorful concoction with my dinner recently and it was simply yum! The peaches are plentiful right now and I used a combination of white and yellow, but only because both came in my CSA box and I didn’t realize they were different. You could probably add a tiny bit of Chevre or Mozzarella if you wanted to, but it’s perfectly delicious just as is.

The Anti-Recipe:

2-3 peaches, peeled and sliced
1 medium red onion, thinly sliced
a few leaves of fresh Basil
Oil & Vinegar (to taste)

Place peaches and onions in a bowl. Drizzle with oil (I used olive) and vinegar (I used red wine). Sprinkle with Basil leaves and enjoy!

{Of course I’d rather this post be about gooey peach cobbler, but since we’re trying to get healthy at my house, this salad will do. It really is tasty…not that it can compete with cobbler though!}

Southern Weddings at the Swan House

The Atlanta History Center’s Swan House provided a gorgeous backdrop for these images, featured in the Summer 2011 issue of Weddings Unveiled Magazine.

While my schedule was filled with weddings to attend last summer, this year has been much lighter. I guess as each year passes, I have less and less single friends left for which to attend festivities.

From the pool of regular people who make up our world, there will always a certain few who stand apart. Their style is copied, their virtues are aspired to. Jackie will always be one of those people. It’s hard to believe she would be 82 years old today, and even harder still to believe she’s been gone for almost 20 years.

The mark she left on us is indelible and for this reason, we will continue to celebrate her. Happy Birthday Jackie! Thanks for the elegance, class and fortitude that we could always expect from you.

Anti-Recipe: Not Your Granny’s Green Bean Salad

I’m definitely not a green bean snob…from canned to frozen, I eat ‘em all. But fresh is always best and this recipe gave me a great new way to enjoy all the beans I’m currently getting in my CSA box each week. It was super easy and oh-so tasty too.

The Anti-Recipe:

1 lb of green beans, washed and ends trimmed (string-less beans work best for this)
2 pears, halved & thinly sliced
1/2 cup of sugared pecans {I used these & they were amazing!}
1/3 cup olive oil
2 T red wine vinegar
1 tsp brown sugar (or to taste)

Blanch beans for 3-5 minutes and then transfer them to an ice water bath. Arrange on a plate with sliced pears and pecans. Whisk the oil, vinegar & sugar together to make the dressing. Drizzle dressing over the salad and serve.

If you think this sounds like an odd combo, trust me…it’s SO good! You have to get a little bite of bean and pear together to taste what I mean. Enjoy!

An Extra Helping of Style: Jonathan Adler

Jonathan Adler is a designer whose style I’ve always admired, partly because it’s so punchy and bright and partly because he is brave enough to try just about anything. His color combinations, retro shapes and pattern mixings never fail to cheer.

I enjoyed his book, My Prescription for Anti-Depressive Living, and think it could be a great source of inspiration for even the most blah of décor. We visited one of his stores in Atlanta a few months ago and I couldn’t help taking a couple of pictures.

All this color isn’t for everybody, but it certainly makes me happy. And according to Jonathan, my home is happy too!

Friday Flashback: Lady Wrestlers at the Expo

Sometimes I like to think about what my life could have been like if I were born in a different time. Apparently, had I been of age in the early 1900s, I could have been a lady wrestler. This image was taken at the 1910 Appalachian Expo, a huge event in Knoxville that officials thought would turn our fair city into a cosmopolitan southern center.

Sadly, it didn’t yield the results they hoped for, but we still have some lovely architecture to show for it and can say that former president Teddy Roosevelt was in attendance.

The county fair is probably the closest thing we have to an expo nowadays and I always enjoy the heck out of it! It’s still fun to reminisce about the past and what might have been. I just don’t think Wrestlin’ Belle Simple has the same ring to it though.

Farm Fresh + Fancy

I recently picked up a set of vintage silver-plated flatware for a steal. The pattern, from 1936 by Wm. Rogers, is called Fascination. I like it because of the art deco design and I plan on using it as my every-day silverware.

My favorite thing about this particular set is it came with several serving pieces, including the one above which I was able to identify as a tomato server. It certainly makes farm fresh ‘maters feel a bit more fancy!

My friend Mollie posted a lovely tomato tart recipe on her blog today, but plain old tomato slices make me just as happy. How are you enjoying the season’s bounty?

Healthy Inspiration a’ la @just_ripe

Combine my participation in a local farm’s CSA program this summer with a recent viewing of this film and you’ve got one inspired belle trying to eat a whole lot healthier. When my parents were visiting me last week, we enjoyed the most delicious breakfast at a new downtown spot that is grocery store, restaurant and food co-op all in one.

just ripe is a neat little place located on Union Ave. in the heart of downtown Knoxville. Initially funded by local support and Kickstarter, just ripe offers East Tennesseans a great selection of local and regional products and wares. Can you tell how much we enjoyed our breakfast?

In fact, my mom’s selection of Apple Carrot Quesadilla was so tasty, I just had to recreate it over the weekend. Oh I’ll definitely be popping back into just ripe, but until then I can enjoy my own version of their yummy breakfast melt.

Here’s how I did it. Combine 1 carrot (grated), 1 green apple (chopped) and a handful each of dried cranberries and chopped pecans. Stir in 2 T of sour cream (or Greek yogurt). Use this mixture to fill a whole wheat tortilla, plus add a sprinkling of Monterey Jack cheese. Heat (I used a regular skillet, but you could also bake it in the oven) until the cheese is melted and enjoy.

For the record, my southern beau wasn’t too sure about this combination but once he tried it, he was sold! I hope y’all will visit just ripe the next time you are in Knoxville and let me know what you think! My dad also picked up some of their homemade granola and it was really tasty.

A Modern “It” Girl

I’ve always been a fan of Clara Bow. Imagine my surprise to see her 1927 film It available as a selection to watch instantly on Netflix. The film, also the source of her nickname “the It girl,” is a lively, yet silent romp. Watching it requires your full attention so don’t try to view it while multi-tasking or you’ll miss much of the charm (and probably the story!).

The above clip shows Clara and her suitor enjoying a carnival fun house…although I don’t think that whirling disc would pass any safety inspections by today’s standards.

Here’s a little re-style of Clara’s pleated skirt & sweater ensemble from the film. Have you ever looked to a film from the past to get inspiration for the present?

We’re all roasting in the summer heat, so the thought of putting on a coat is the last thing on our minds. But you might want to think about jackets a little right now as many styles are currently in deep clearance, what with stores trying to make room for new fall items.

I’ve always believed outerwear is one arena in which the Europeans have us beat…they tend to look so polished and 9 times out of 10 it is because they are wearing a chic topper or wrap. Let’s give them a run for their money and amp up our own style with classic outerwear!

This navy trench, similar to the one sported by Duchess Catherine, is currently on sale at Land’s End, along with many other cute styles, including the green gingham trench and black quilted topper pictured above.

This sweet yellow raincoat is less than half of its original price at Eddie Bauer along with some pretty blazers.

I know we’re smack dab in the middle of summer, but is anybody else stocking up on coats? On the first crisp day of fall, you won’t regret it! Happy Monday friends!

Anti-Recipe: Smashed Turnips

Turnips are one of those foods that often get passed over and I’ll admit to never having eaten them until recently. Maybe the image of Scarlett pulling a turnip out of the red earth of Tara and chomping down on it, only to retch, was emblazoned in my mind.

Since there were some cute little turnips in my CSA box a few weeks ago, I decided to be brave and try them. To my pleasant surprise, they were delicious! And I can promise this recipe will leave you much happier than Scarlett in her famed scene.

Smashed Turnips

3-4 turnips, washed & coarsely chopped
butter
fresh chives (mine are the garlic variety!)
salt & pepper

Cover turnips with water in a saucepan and bring to a boil. Lower heat and simmer until the turnips are tender, but not mushy. Drain the water. Mash turnips with a little butter. Stir in chives and salt & pepper to taste. Enjoy!

{This dish is especially great for someone practicing a low-carb lifestyle, because they are an alternative to mashed potatoes without sacrificing flavor.}

Penny Postcards

I’ve always been drawn to old things, especially when they have a story. One thing I’ve collected over the years is postcards…some from my travels and others depicting artwork and images I hold dear. My small collection of post cards pales in comparison to the cards my great-aunt received and collected in her life.

The cards, mostly dated from around 1910, ended up in the care of my great-grandmother, sister-in-law of the collector. My mom says she can remember looking through them as a child and I’m so thankful to have a few of them now.

This particular card tickles me because Bakers Cross Roads, Tennessee is little more than its name suggests…a spot where two roads happen to cross. I’m impressed they had their own official card printed.

This image, the back of the Bakers X Roads card, is sweet because it begins with the phrase, from your best friend. Kind words from a loved one are always appreciated, no matter how thoroughly modern we consider ourselves to be.

I wonder if this seemingly innocent card was considered risqué by the morality standards of the past.

This is another of my favorites because the concept of a harlequin doesn’t really seem like something the folks in rural Middle Tennessee would have been familiar with, but it paints a magical scene.

I hope we never stop sending and receiving mail…the old-fashioned way. There is something so fun about opening up the mailbox to find a card or letter inside. Let’s all think about sending someone we love a sweet note…it would do wonders to brighten his or her day!

Anti-Recipe: Pork n’ Greens

Kale is something of a super food, even trumping Popeye’s beloved spinach in several categories of vitamins and nutrients. I’ve been eating more of it lately since I took part in a local farm’s CSA, a program that allows me to pick up a box of farm fresh veggies & fruits each week.

The best way to partake in the leafy goodness is to eat Kale raw, but if you are looking to incorporate it in a cooked meal…this is the one to try. I used ground pork, but you could easily use another meat.

Pork n’ Greens

1 lb ground pork, lean beef, turkey or chicken
3 cups of Kale, washed and torn
1 cup water
Onion, chopped
1 T red wine vinegar

Brown meat in a pot with a heavy bottom. When meat is fully cooked, transfer it to a paper towel-lined plate or colander to drain the grease. Over medium heat, put a handful of Kale leaves into the pot and stir them around until wilted to a bright green. Keep adding Kale until all of it has been wilted down just a little bit. Add a cup of water (onion optional), cover and simmer for 8-10 minutes. Add the drained meat & vinegar back to the pot and enjoy!

Shirt Tales

I don’t really look to trends all that much when choosing my clothes, but this summer’s light, airy blouses are definitely making their way into my wardrobe. There’s something about a blouse that feels distinctly feminine…and for a tiny bit of extra effort (I’m talking about ironing, people), a blouse can make you feel special.

These first two options (both from Gap) are lovely because they aren’t the typical button-up variety. Button-up blouses can be problematic for those of us bustier girls. [Sorry Pe-pa…you can skip today’s post]

If you prefer a buttoned blouse, something like this one (from Old Navy) would be a good option. The ruffled detail is sweet and draws attention to your face, plus the color is flattering to many different complexions.

This smocked top (also Old Navy) is another example with pretty details that are easy to wear. I might complain about the heat, but an adorable blouse definitely makes it better. I’m curious…are you wearing blouses this summer? If so, how are you wearing them?

{p.s. I’m not really pushing Gap or Old Navy…I just know what brands work for me and these are two that do!}

New Bike Summer

I was something of a late bloomer when it came to bike riding, not learning to pedal on my own until I was in 4th grade or so. Once I learned to ride, I loved my bike so much and spent many summer days zipping around, pretending it was a horse, of course.

During college, it seemed everybody had a bike…but since I always lived fairly close and got by just fine with walking, I never cared too much about having one.

Then the lovely Miss Janice posted a picture of her new bike (a sweet birthday treat) and I was so smitten. Maybe it’s time for me to have a bike again! (Here’s a link to Huffy so you can see different styles)

#GWTW75…Celebrations never cease

Today is the 75th anniversary of the first time Margaret Mitchell’s book, Gone with the Wind was available for purchase. I know it’s been GWTW frenzy around the blogosphere lately, but for good reason. From social media meetups to movie premiere galas, Atlanta has been hopping this summer with all the excitement. NPR did a wonderful piece on the anniversary, which you can listen to here.

I took the above images during my visit to the Margaret Mitchell House in Midtown Atlanta and the preceding quote is also from the exhibit. I wonder if Ms. Mitchell would have been surprised by the reach of her fame even all these years later. Considering her other contributions to society, in addition to her written words, I think she has achieved fame in every category to which she aspired.

If you still haven’t gotten your fill of GWTW, Georgia Public Broadcasting produced a fabulous documentary about the life of Margaret Mitchell called “Margaret Mitchell: American Rebel” which is airing tonight. Even if you don’t live in the GPB viewing area, you can still view the film in a web presentation tonight, as well as chat online with the director! Hope you’ll tune in!

Hart of Dixie

Is anyone else kind of secretly excited (but embarrassed to be so) about the new CW show called Hart of Dixie? What is it about the adventures of a city girl who moves to the south being such fodder for entertainment?

Maybe I’m just happy to see Rachel Bilson acting again or maybe I’m just a sucker for anything set in the sweet south. I guess come September we’ll see. Who else is going to watch? No judgment!

I’ve always struggled to define my style when it comes to my home. Don’t misunderstand, I know what I like and can put those things together…in small doses. As for the overall statement of my domain, things get a little muddled. Recently, I was very happy to discover a magazine that really captures many aspects of my style.

Open publication - Free publishing

Adore Home Magazine is a wonderful online publication from Australia and I can’t believe I’m just now finding it. All the images I’ve seen so far are really giving me inspiration for what I want to do in my home. Of course I don’t want to simply copy what lots of professional stylists have created…it just helps me to know that it’s possible to take what I like and make it look cohesive.

I love all the unexpected pops of color used for basic pieces of furniture. I’m definitely more maximalist than minimal so the eclectic vignettes and groupings of items appeal to me too.

Another magazine with similar styles is the British publication, LivingEtc. Its site has a great feature that allows you to search by type of room using parameters of color, etc.

Is there a magazine or blog that really helps you define your style?

Welcome Summer!

This morning as I walked down the sidewalk, the air was a’ buzz with June bugs. It’s hard to believe an entire year has passed since I did a June bug post here on SBS. Maybe my fondness for them comes from childhood memories of trying to catch the little boogers while spending summers at my great-grandparents’ farm.

Isn’t it funny how something so small can represent such a dear memory? Sort of like every time I catch a whiff of cherry-vanilla scented Jergen’s lotion, I think of my granny. Our lives and calendars are so full these days…I want to be able to look back on this time warmly and not be sad because I rushed around so much I forget to make memories.

Today summer officially begins. Let’s spend this season enjoying the little things and really make it one for the books. Even if all that means to you is sleeping in 10 extra minutes or enjoying your lunch under a lovely shade tree somewhere.

And if your lunch happens to include a crisp, cold gin & tonic, I think that’s pretty great too! Happy Tuesday and Happy 1st day of Summer!

Anti-Recipe: Raspberry Eatin’ Mess

You might have seen my recent post featuring an oh-so easy dessert recipe called ‘Strawberry Eatin’ Mess.’ The title is my southern interpretation of the traditional British dessert, Eton Mess, which originated at Eton College and was enjoyed as picnic fare at the school’s annual event.

I didn’t think it could be improved upon until this weekend when we dished it up with fresh raspberries instead. Oh my goodness. It’s the easiest dessert to make and so pretty to present. I served them in vintage lowball glasses etched with my initial (although S could just as easily stand for southern!) and they got some oohs and ahs.

The Recipe:

Beat heavy cream with the whisk attachment of an electric mixer until soft peaks form. Crush vanilla meringues (mine were store-bought). Layer berries, cream, and crushed meringues. Enjoy!

Writing Wisdom from @emilygiffin

So I know I promised to do a post on the fabulous Emily Giffin, author extraordinaire who spoke at the skirt! Magazine Creative Conference. She imparted some excellent wisdom to our group, mostly pertaining to writing, but it could also really apply to whatever your dreams might be.

If you aren’t familiar with Ms. Giffin, she wrote Something Borrowed, the book recently turned into a motion picture starring Kate Hudson & John Krasinski. Something Borrowed is followed up by Something Blue, both of which I really enjoyed poolside a few summers back. Anyway…

I’m not going to try and list everything EG said, although I was furiously scribbling notes from my spot on the front row…hence the blurry pic! But here are some of the tidbits that spoke to me most and my thoughts on each.

EG: Don’t assume that other writer’s have an easier time than you…writing is just plain hard [but worth it!]

EG: Think of yourself as a ‘real’ writer no matter what your circumstances are. [In other words, call yourself a writer and you’ll be a writer. Don’t think that just because you haven’t ‘published’ a book or had your book turned into a movie you aren’t a real writer…this one meant a lot to me!]

EG: Every book in a bookstore is just the product of one person who sat down and wrote one page at a time. Also, editors are just people…all it takes is one person who wants to publish your book. It is possible. [When you think about it this way, it really does seem like an attainable goal]

EG: Don’t worry about being perfect and DON’T compare yourself to anybody else. [LOVE that]

I really appreciate Ms. Giffin taking time to come speak to us…it was one of the highlights of the whole conference for me. I’m embarrassed to say I still haven’t seen the film version of Something Borrowed but it’s on my to-watch list! If you’ve read her books or seen the film, what did you think?

Seersucker Social, Social Indeed

Chalk it up to ‘city-envy,’ but after spending some time in Atlanta lately, it seems there is no shortage of adventures to be had in that famous southern destination. I was there this weekend for a conference, but little did I know such a stylish event was taking place just a few miles from me. It’s probably a good thing I didn’t know because I might have been tempted to skip my sessions and join in!

The Seersucker Social is a group bike ride which started from Woodruff Park and ended with a picnic at Oakland Cemetery. They even stopped for popsicles and peach mojitos along the way! Maybe wearing dress clothes on a bike ride through a bustling (sweltering!) city doesn’t sound like the most practical idea, but since when was being fabulous ever practical?

All images were taken by the talented Cameron Adams, photographer and fashion blogger extraordinaire. He is known for his blog, The Chattanoogan which is a bit like that of the Sartorialist, but better because it’s set in the south!

It’s apparent from these smiling faces that great fun was had by all! Are you feeling some city envy too? Let’s quit our belly-aching and make an effort to improve our own towns, one fabulous day at a time!

skirt Magazine Creative Conference 2011

I just got back from a wonderfully fun and busy weekend in Atlanta where I attended the Creative Conference, held by skirt! Magazine. I’ve been blogging over at skirt! for about a year and was really excited when I first heard about this event. As most conferences go, it was packed to the brim with information and just about every minute was planned with some sort of activity.

What set the Creative Conference apart was how many genuine connections were made. It might sound cliché to say “friends for life,” but I truly believe I will keep in touch with some of these ladies for a very long time. Even if you haven’t attended a conference like this, it’s so important to find a support system that serves as your cheering squad. And if you’d like to attend next year, you’ll definitely see me there!

I’ll be sharing more this week about some of the things I took away from the conference, including my up-close-and-personal with fabulous author Emily Giffin and how I won some cool loot, thanks to my 2nd grade teacher! Happy Monday y’all!
